Community Uplift, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to
empowering communities through education and outreach, is excited to
announce the launch of its new literacy initiative,Community Corners. This
program will see the erection of mini libraries throughout South Fort Worth,
each dedicated to a beloved children's book. The first Community Corner
dedicated to Dr. Seuss’ timeless classic, The Lorax, will be unveiled on
September 14th, 2024, at 9:00 AM at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church,
located at 2951 Evans Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76104.
In collaboration with the Black Firemen's Association and The Book Angel
Non-Profit, Community Uplift is committed to fostering a love for reading and
providing accessible educational resources to underserved neighborhoods.
The Community Corners; initiative aims to inspire young readers by creating
vibrant, book-themed mini libraries that serve as both educational hubs and
community gathering spaces.
The unveiling event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, remarks from local
leaders and partners, and a reading of The Lorax by a special guest.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore the mini library and learn
more about Community Uplift’s ongoing efforts to support literacy and
community development.
The Fort Worth Report highlighted a dire issue: in 2021 and 2022, only 20-28% of Black students and 29-36% of Hispanic students in Fort Worth ISD were reading at grade level. In stark contrast, the combined literacy rates in white and Asian communities exceed 100%. This alarming disparity underscores the urgent need for action.
Community Uplift is dedicated to eradicating this educational inequity by creating community library corners in neighborhoods of color. These spaces will (1) bridge the literacy gap by providing free access to books and educational resources and (2) rehabilitate the educational landscape, empowering the next generation to thrive.
